May 31, 2013 – Durban, KwaZulu-Natal – The South African Maritime Safety Authority held the media launch of its Maritime Career Expo and Job Summit in Durban tonight, May 31, 2013. Addressing journalists at the event the Executive Head of the Centre for Maritime Excellence, Sindiswa Nhlumayo, said the country had a coastline of 3000 kilometres and because the land was so small, water was critical. She said while 12000 vessels visited South Africa every year with 24000 seafarers on board, South Africa had less than 2400 seafarers.

“That is why this career expo is so important,” she said. The career expo and job summit are two legs of the same event. The expo runs from June 10 to 12 and the summit takes place on the 12th June. SAMSA aims to bring ten thousand pupils from around KwaZulu-Natal to the event to promote maritime as “A Career Less Ordinary”.
