Aug 5, 2013, Durban: The iconic Pavilion Shopping Centre is undergoing a massive structural redesign and redevelopment as part of its Master Development Plan (MDP) worth approximately R228 million. The new changes are expected to be completed in March 2014.
The Pavilion is owned by Pareto Limited and the redevelopment project is managed by Motseng Project Management. Tomorrow (Tuesday) Pareto Chief Executive Officer, Marius Muller, has invited members of the media to unveil the full plan of Phase One of the MDP.
Key stakeholders including business, property developer and members of the Provincial and Local Government, will attend the unveiling. This new initiative is already creating new employment, engaging local service providers, boosting local business as well as creating a new business focused investment in the West of Durban and KwaZulu Natal.
Phase One includes an extensive refurbishment of the Via Pareto mall on the ground floor which has already started. A brand new food hall is expected, an improved entertainment offering which includes four state of the art cinemas with plush seating and the latest technology. The existing 8 cinemas will be upgraded to world class digitalised standards.
With the new changes visitor access will be made easier with ample dedicated parking for the entertainment area, improved lift and escalator access, creating a flow to different areas and levels, and cutting edge designs and upgrades to the restroom and family facilities.
Recognised as one of South Africa’s most successful shopping centre destinations, The Pavilion is also ranked as one of the top six super regional shopping centres in the country. The Pavilion also celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, with the management expressing their gratitude to shoppers for their patronage.
Muller thanked the people of KwaZulu-Natal for their support and patronage over the years, adding that this redevelopment is one step towards giving back to their loyal shoppers. Tenants and shoppers have thrown their support behind the changes.
The MDP has received a positive reception from the surrounding communities of Westville including the Christopher Nxumalo Higher Primary School, which is a school adopted by The Pavilion management as part of its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) project. Added Muller: “The new development will increase the GDP of the province and encourage entrepreneurial growth in the area. We are poised to contribute widely to Pavilions consumer option base and boast local economy.”
The development will retain The Pavilion’s current market, ignite world renowned brands, and aims to restore the market share with its evolutionary changes for shoppers and spenders.
“The MDP aims to provide a hub that provides shoppers, food and entertainment lovers with a setting that will make Pavilion stand out from the rest. We also want to contribute towards alleviating unemployment by creating jobs,’ said Muller.
While construction is underway, the Centre Management will ensure safety for shoppers and the amount of least inconvenience for shoppers, says Nisha Kemraj, the newly appointed General Manager of Pavilion. “Working within a live retail environment is extremely challenging as safety is of paramount importance. In order to limit the impact on trading, most of the construction work is scheduled for the night.
“We encourage our customers to give us feedback and invite them to the Pavilion Facebook page. We also will provide feedback and information hubs in the centre where shopper’s queries can be addressed,” says Kemraj.
Dewald van Staden, managing director of Motseng Project Mangement, said the optimism for jobs, new tenants and a lively business hub for the economy of KwaZulu-Natal was a win-win situation for all. “We are preparing the Centre for the festive season, make entertainment a must see experience, and shopping as easy as walking through some of the world’s high streets, right here in Westville. “Safety is a number one aspect for us and we ensure that all construction areas are clearly blocked off which ensures safety for all shoppers and a sense of privacy for all workers,” said Van Staden.
