Congratulations, KZN Liberty Radio Awards winners
Four of KwaZulu-Natal’s top radio stations have done us proud this weekend scooping eight prestigious wins at the 2019 Liberty Radio Awards in Sandton, Gauteng.
Merited Liberty Radio accolades were bestowed on East Coast Radio (ECR), Vuma FM, Lotus FM and Gagasi FM.
East Coast radio scooped three awards – presenter Bongani Mtolo for his Afternoon Drive, the station’s Breakfast show and presenter Sky Shabalala was awarded Bright Star inductee.
SABC’s Lotus FM’s presenter O’Neil Nair won the award for Breakfast Show, the station’s Weekend Radio Show (Morning Masala) and 1860 Radio Documentary took two further wins.
Gagasi FM’s Block Party won in the Music show category. Spirited and well-liked presenter Patricia Nonkululeko Malemia from Vuma FM 103 FM was recognised as a Bright Star inductee.
The Liberty Radio Awards is a credible, well-judged programme that promotes excellence in radio with a view to ensuring that radio remains one of the foremost media choices in South Africa.
Phindile Makwakwa, acting Chief Executive Officer for Tourism KZN congratulated the province’s radio stars, adding their wins ‘’shone a light on the fraternity’’.
‘’KZN radio stations are key partners for us that assist us in the promotion of the KZN destination and promoting tourism to the millions of their listeners. We value their role in the destination marketing.
‘’The media plays a significate role to disseminate information. Both the media and archaeological monuments, for instance, have messages and missions with various dimensions.
‘’In this world of constant technological evolution, consumers especially tourists are changing their behaviour patterns looking for more “tourist-friendly” sources of information. Thus, we applaud the radio stations in promoting the tourism industry worldwide,’’ Makwakwa said.
East Coast radio received a total of 15 nominations, Gagasi FM received four nominations, and Lotus FM received eight nominations.
The radio stations and their
presenters and staff had made KZN proud, said Makwakwa, adding the Liberty
Radio Awards were the only industry-wide awards in the South African radio
industry, which sought to recognise excellence.
Makwakwa said: “Recognition of this magnitude follows reputations built on a winning culture where hard work lies at the core. You have made KZN proud.’’
The annual awards programme, which draws entries from the public and commercial radio sectors, is regarded as the “Oscars” of South African radio industry.
